Activities Offer Students Look at Being Blind

Third-graders in Jennifer McClelland’s class at Mars Area Elementary School received a look at what its like to be a blind person as part of a special lesson on Nov. 27.

Led by their classmate, Maryjane Eichenhauer, who is blind, as well as Lindsay McCloskey and William E. Hanuschock of Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, the students discussed how blind individuals experience everyday life.

The students then joined in numerous centers that focused on activities such as reading, writing and counting with braille; identifying objects through touch; how to use a walking  cane; and more.
