Fourth-graders in Stephanie Graff and Jamie Waters’s classes at Mars Area Elementary School joined in a “Book Tasting” event on Nov. 25.

The students were able to “taste” a sampling of books from various genres — Autobiography/Biography, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Informational Text, Mystery, Realistic Fiction, Science Fiction, Traditional Literature — and were asked to make note of the title, author and genre, then to start reading the first chapter. The fourth-graders could then write and discuss what they liked or disliked about the book as well as whether or not the book was one that they would like to continue reading. 

The activity was meant to promote a love of reading and to have students step outside of the box to be engaged in different book types that they would not normally be interested in.
