Second-grader Places First in Braille Challenge

Maryjane EichenhauerMars Area Elementary School second-grader Maryjane Eichenhauer earned first place in the Pennsylvania Regional Braille Challenge.

Eichenhauer, who competed in the Apprentice Category (Grades 1-2), received the top score in reading and writing out of all students who participated in the challenge across the state.

Competing alongside her peers in the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children (WPSBC) Outreach Program, Eichenhauer read unique passages and answered reading comprehension questions; proofread sentences; and complete a writing challenge using a Perkins Braillewriter.

The annual contest, held January through March, calls upon students, who are blind or visually impaired, to hone their braille literacy skills by competing in several braille challenges — reading comprehension, spelling, speed and accuracy, proofreading and charts and graphs.
