Students Focus on Mathematics While Celebrating ‘Pi Day’

Fourth-graders at Mars Area Elementary School celebrated “Pi Day” with several activities surrounding the mathematical constant.

Under the direction of pre-service teacher (preK-4) candidates in Butler County Community College’s Math for Teacher Education II class, fourth-graders learned that pi (3.14159265359...) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter; and that for any circle, the distance around its edge is a little more than three times the distance across.

Students rotated through various learning stations, including “Jobs that Use Pi Memory,” “Pi Art,” “Pi Bracelets,” “Pi Paper Chain & Pi Toss,” “Pi City,” “Pi Investigations,” “Piku & Word Challenge,” “Pi Puzzles,” “Pi Reflection,” “Pi Uno” and a “Roll the Dice Pi Race.”
