Fourth-graders in Stephanie Graff’s class at Mars Area Elementary School are studying earthworms as part of an activity based on the book, “How to Eat Fried Worms” by Thomas Rockwell.
The students began by measuring the length, width and “squishiness of a gummy worm to develop hypotheses about what to expect. The fourth-graders then received their earthworms and set to identifying the size and other features of the terrestrial invertebrates.
The activity also asked to students to conduct several experiments to determine whether an earthworm prefers dry or wet conditions, light or dark, and smooth or rough surfaces.
