Fourth-graders' "Bouquet" Selected for Summer Flower Show

Floral BouquetA “bouquet” of flowers designed by Mars Area Elementary School students was selected for a display at Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Garden’s “Jungle Quest” Summer Flower Show.

As part of the Phipp’s Conservatory annual Fairchild Challenge: Botanical Sculptures “Bountiful Bouquets: Blossoms of the Jungle” Challenge, students were asked to research native and endemic flowering plants of Panama; then to use recycled materials to create a bouquet and write a brief essay describing the plants researched.

Of the two entries submitted by Mars Area Elementary School, the bouquet created by fourth-graders Kendall Fonzi, Jessica Li, Jane Lyons, Eleanor McCauley, Everly Northrop and Hannah Zeigler was selected for the Summer Flower Show. Additional bouquets created by students for the challenge will be on display at Mars Area Elementary School’s Steel City Showcase on Thursday, May 22.

Phipps Conservatory’s annual Fairchild Challenge is a free, multidisciplinary, standards-based environmental education outreach program designed to encourage students’ innate sense of curiosity about the world around them. The program empowers students to engage in civic life and to become energetic and knowledgeable members of their communities.
