Students Focus on Mathematics While Celebrating ‘Pi Day’

Fourth-graders at Mars Area Elementary School celebrated “Pi Day” with several activities surrounding the mathematical constant.

Under the direction of pre-service teacher (preK-4) candidates in Butler County Community College’s Math for Teacher Education II class, fourth-graders learned that pi (3.14159265359...) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter; and that for any circle, the distance around its edge is a little more than three times the distance across.

The students joined in a variety of learning activities, including “Jobs the Use Pi Memory,” “Pi Art,” “Pi Bracelet,” “Pi Card Game,” “Pi Paper Chain,” “Pi Word Challenge,” “Pi City,” “Pi Investigations,” “Piku,” “Pi Puzzles,” “Pi Reflection,” “Pi Toss,” and a “Roll the Dice Pi Race.”
