Mars Area Elementary School will welcome NASA Astronaut Woody Hoburg at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9.

Hoburg, a Pittsburgh native, has logged 186 days in space including time aboard the International Space Station (ISS). He will talk with fourth-graders who have participated in various space-related activities throughout their time at Mars Area Elementary School.

Last spring, in their STEAM classes, the students participated in the “Tomatosphere” project, planting and monitoring the development of tomato plants, grown from seeds that orbited the Earth aboard the International Space Station.

“(The students) are eager to hear about other experiments that are happening on the ISS,” says Colleen Hinrichsen, STEAM teacher, “They are also excited to learn what living in space is like from an actual astronaut.”

Ahead of the visit, fourth-graders are brainstorming questions to ask Hoburg. For more information, call  (724) 625-3161.
